16x17x2mm L/R Carbide Profile Knife
16x17x2 mm L/R carbide profile knives, R1.5-R3. Left- and right-hand radius inserts.
A 16x17x2mm Left/Right (L/R) Carbide Profile Knife is specifically designed for use in edgebanding machines, which are commonly used in furniture and cabinetry production to apply edging materials to panels. These knives are critical for shaping and trimming the edge material to match the desired profile, often creating a smooth, rounded edge.

Application
-
Edgebanding in Cabinetry and Furniture:
- Edge Trimming: After edge banding materials (like PVC, ABS, melamine, or veneer) are applied to the edges of panels, these knives trim the excess material, ensuring a clean, smooth finish that aligns perfectly with the panel’s surface.
- Profile Shaping: The knives create specific profiles (rounded, beveled, etc.) on the edges, enhancing the aesthetic and functional aspects of furniture, cabinets, and other wood products.
-
Symmetrical Edge Profiling:
- L/R Knife Pairs: The Left/Right orientation means the knives are used in pairs to create symmetrical profiles on both sides of the edge, ensuring consistent and uniform results.
- Versatile Profiles: Suitable for producing various edge profiles, which can be customized to match design specifications in woodworking projects.
Design and Construction
The 16 x 17 x 2 mm L/R carbide profile knives carries replaceable tungsten carbide insert knives on a 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel body for spindle and moulder work. Left- and right-hand (L/R) versions are listed: 16 x 17 x 2 mm knives at radius values (R) of 1.5, 2 and 3 mm per the specifications table.

How It Works
The radius knives seat in the head pocket and present a ground radius edge: as the panel feeds past, the radius forms in one pass. When an edge dulls, the knife is turned or swapped in minutes — the head stays in the machine and the profile holds its position.
Applications
- Radius profiling on spindle moulders
- Edge rounding on panel lines
- Cabinet and furniture profile work
- Production moulding heads
Suitable Materials
- Solid wood
- MDF and particleboard
- Plywood and veneered panels
- Laminated boards

The ground radius inserts hold the profile geometry across long production runs.
System Comparison: Replaceable Insert vs. Solid Knife
Insert systems keep the body in service and replace only the cutting edges. For production work, this is usually the lower-cost way to hold edge quality.
| Property | Replaceable Insert Knife (This Tool) | Solid Profile Knife |
|---|---|---|
| Edge replacement | Swap the worn insert only; the steel body stays in service | Regrind or replace the complete tool |
| Body material | 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel body, reused across insert changes | Whole tool consumed as the edge wears |
| Downtime per edge change | Minutes — index or swap the insert | Send out for regrinding or buy a new tool |
| Profile changes | Fit a different insert geometry to the same body | New tool required per profile |
| Edge condition | Fresh edge on every change; consistent cut quality | Edge quality drifts between regrinds |
| Best suited for | Production cutterheads with repeat profiles | One-off profiles and low-volume work |
Solid knives remain the better choice for one-off profiles and very low volumes.
Delivery Scope
Single knife, box quantities on request. Order by the length, width, thickness and radius stated in the specifications table below.
Why Choose VPOINT
- One-year warranty on every cutter — defects in material or workmanship are covered for 12 months from delivery.
- Custom tooling — diameters, shanks, cutting lengths and flute configurations built to your drawing or sample.
- Non-standard fabrication — sizes outside the standard catalogue, including special geometries.
- Resharpening service — cutters return to service after regrinding at a fraction of new-tool cost.
- Factory-direct since 2008 — ISO 9001 manufacturing in Sichuan and Dongguan, China; no trading intermediaries.
Send a drawing, a sample or a worn tool, and our engineering team will quote the exact specification you need.
Precision & Quality Control
Every cutter is inspected before shipment. Shank diameter, cutting-edge diameter, cutting length and overall length are measured against the values listed in the specifications table, and cutting edge runout is verified on the assembled tool.
Tools measuring outside tolerance do not ship. Inspection is performed under our ISO 9001 quality system, with batch records retained for traceability.
