Outdoor Wear-Resistant Carbide Tire Studs for Abrasive Surfaces
Wear-resistant studs specified for outdoor routes where grit and exposed asphalt set the service life.
Design and Construction
Outdoor-duty tungsten carbide tyre studs built for abrasive surfaces. The carbide grade and the exposed pin height are chosen so the stud keeps its profile when the route includes grit, sand and patches of bare asphalt.
How It Works
On clean ice the carbide barely wears; on exposed asphalt the stud is ground against a hard, abrasive surface. Wear rate therefore depends on how much of the route is bare, not on the number of kilometres alone.
Applications
Rural winter routes, sanded and gritted roads, mixed ice/asphalt delivery routes, ATV and utility tyres.
Field Cases
- Rural delivery: wear-resistant studs lasted the season on sanded roads.
- Utility fleet: exposed asphalt sections no longer rounded the pins early.
- Mixed route: stud height was checked at mid-season and stayed in range.
Performance Data

|---|---|
| Duty | Abrasive outdoor routes |
| Core | Wear-resistant tungsten carbide |
| Wear driver | Share of bare / gritted asphalt |
| Maintenance | Mid-season protrusion check |
Suitable Materials
Winter tyres on sanded, gritted and mixed ice/asphalt routes; ATV and utility tyres.
Material Comparison: Wear Rate by Surface: Clean Ice vs Snow vs Grit vs Bare Asphalt
What actually wears a stud. Typical industry field observation:
| Factor | Clean Ice | Packed Snow | Gritted Road | Bare Asphalt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abrasive action on the pin | Minimal | Low | Moderate | Highest |
| Relative wear rate | Lowest | Low | Moderate | Highest |
| Dominant mechanism | Almost none | Soft contact | Grit scoring | Grinding |
| Pin profile over a season | Held | Held | Rounds slowly | Rounds quickly |
| Recommended check | Season end | Season end | Mid-season | Monthly |
| Best stud choice | Any carbide core | Standard carbide | Wear-resistant grade | Wear-resistant grade (this stud) |
Delivery Scope
Bulk studs; carbide grade, dimensions and quantity confirmed with the order.
Why Choose VPOINT
Service life is quoted against the share of bare asphalt, which is what actually wears the stud.
Precision & Quality Control
Carbide hardness, pin height and seating verified per lot with ISO 9001 batch traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions
What wears a stud out?
Bare and gritted asphalt grinding the carbide pin – not clean ice.
How often should I check?
Mid-season on gritted routes, more often where asphalt is mostly bare.
Which grade?
A wear-resistant tungsten carbide grade is specified for these routes.
Are these for ATV tyres?
Yes, ATV and utility tyres are a common application.
What is inspected?
Carbide hardness, pin height and seating per lot.
