Diamond Cleaning Bottom Bit

The VP0017 series bottom cleaning bit pairs a solid PCD cutting edge with a 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel body in a two-flute flat-bottom geometry. Cutting diameter, shank and cutting length follow the specifications table and are produced to order.

Design and Construction

The VP0017 series bottom cleaning bit pairs a solid PCD cutting edge with a 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel body. The two-flute (Z2) flat-bottom geometry squares the bottom of through-cuts and levels spoilboard surfaces. Cutting diameters (ØD) run 10 to 12.7 mm with a 12.7 mm shank (Ød); usable cutting length (L1) spans 10 to 30 mm for different cleanup depths.

How It Works

Through-cuts on nesting machines leave a small ridge or web where the cutter exits the panel. The flat-bottom geometry planes this ridge off in a single pass, leaving a square bottom and a constant depth. The same geometry surfaces spoilboards and fixture plates flat, keeping the vacuum hold-down seal intact.

Applications

  • Spoilboard surfacing on nesting machines
  • Bottom cleanup after through-cutting
  • Fixture and vacuum table flattening
  • Constant-depth pocket floors

Suitable Materials

  • Melamine-faced particleboard and MDF
  • Laminate (HPL) sheets
  • Veneered plywood
  • Solid wood spoilboard stock

Suitable materials: melamine-faced particleboard, MDF, laminate HPL, veneered plywood, solid hardwood

The PCD edge planes resin-rich MDF and laminated offcuts without build-up, holding a flat bottom across long surfacing runs.

Material Comparison: PCD vs. Tungsten Carbide

The figures below are typical industry data for production woodworking. PCD does not replace carbide in every job — carbide remains the right choice for steel, cast iron and low-volume general work — but on abrasive sheet goods the difference in service life is decisive.

Property PCD Diamond (This Tool) Tungsten Carbide
Hardness 7,000–9,000 HV 1,500–2,000 HV
Tool life on MDF / particleboard / melamine 15–20× longer (500–1,200 h) 30–60 h (baseline)
Tool life on solid hardwood 10–13× longer (800–2,000 h) 80–150 h (baseline)
Tool life on acrylic / plastics 10–15× longer (1,000–3,000 h) 100–200 h (baseline)
Resharpening cycles 5–8 regrinds (thick tips up to 10); each pass removes only 0.2–0.3 mm of diamond 4–6 regrinds, each removing more material
Surface finish Ra ≤ 0.2 μm achievable, stable over the tool life Ra ~0.8 μm typical, degrades as the edge wears
Thermal conductivity 540–560 W/m·K — heat leaves the edge fast ~80 W/m·K
Friction coefficient ≈ 0.05 — lower cutting forces ≈ 0.3
Suited for Abrasive engineered wood, laminates, composites, plastics, non-ferrous metals General-purpose; the only choice for steel and cast iron

Figures are typical published values; actual tool life depends on the workpiece material, feed rate, depth of cut, machine condition and maintenance schedule.

Delivery Scope

Single cutter. Order by part number with the diameter and cutting length stated in the specifications table below.

Why Choose VPOINT

  • One-year warranty on every cutter — defects in material or workmanship are covered for 12 months from delivery.
  • Custom tooling — geometries, diameters, cutting lengths and shank configurations built to your drawing or sample.
  • Non-standard fabrication — profiles and sizes outside the standard catalogue, including profile restoration and special applications.
  • Resharpening service — cutters return to service after regrinding, restoring near-original edge performance at a fraction of new-tool cost.
  • Factory-direct since 2008 — ISO 9001 manufacturing in Sichuan and Dongguan, China; 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel bodies; no trading intermediaries.

Send a drawing, a sample or a worn tool, and our engineering team will quote the exact specification you need.

Precision & Quality Control

Every cutter is inspected at micron level before shipment. Cutting edge condition, cutting diameter (ØD), shank diameter (Ød), cutting length (L1) and overall length (L) are measured against the values listed in the specifications table, and cutting edge runout and concentricity are verified on the assembled tool.

Tools measuring outside tolerance are reground or scrapped — they do not ship. Inspection is performed under our ISO 9001 quality system, with batch records retained for traceability.
