Diamond Straight Bit-Cleaning Bottom
PCD straight-flute bits (Z1/Z2), D 4-12.7 mm, shank 12.7 mm, cutting height 12-15 mm. Flat-bottom slots with square corners for cleanup, slotting and mortise work.
The VPOINT Diamond Straight Bit-Cleaning Bottom is a carbide woodworking cutting tool. Ideal for bottom cleanup after through-cutting, slot and groove cutting and mortise and tenon slot work.
The VP0018 series straight bit pairs a solid PCD cutting edge with a 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel body in a straight-flute, flat-bottom geometry. Diameter, shank and cutting length follow the specifications table and are produced to order.
Design and Construction
The VP0018 series straight bit pairs a solid PCD cutting edge with a 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel body. The straight-flute geometry cuts a flat-bottomed slot with square corners; one- and two-flute (Z1/Z2) configurations are offered. Cutting diameters (ØD) run 4 to 12.7 mm with a 12.7 mm shank (Ød) and 12 to 15 mm cutting height (H), covering fine slotting through general cleanup work.

How It Works
Straight flutes cut a flat-bottomed slot with square corners — the geometry needed for cleaning the bottom of through-cuts, trimming operations and mortise work. The PCD edge holds the corner radius and the flat bottom in abrasive faced boards, keeping slot depth and width constant.
Applications
- Bottom cleanup after through-cutting
- Slot and groove cutting
- Mortise and tenon slot work
- Trimming and sizing passes
Suitable Materials
- Melamine-faced particleboard and MDF
- Laminate (HPL) sheets
- Veneered plywood
- Solid wood

The PCD edge holds square corners and a flat bottom in abrasive sheet goods, keeping slot geometry stable across long production runs.
Material Comparison: PCD vs. Tungsten Carbide
The figures below are typical industry data for production woodworking. PCD does not replace carbide in every job — carbide remains the right choice for steel, cast iron and low-volume general work — but on abrasive sheet goods the difference in service life is decisive.
| Property | PCD Diamond (This Tool) | Tungsten Carbide |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness | 7,000–9,000 HV | 1,500–2,000 HV |
| Tool life on MDF / particleboard / melamine | 15–20× longer (500–1,200 h) | 30–60 h (baseline) |
| Tool life on solid hardwood | 10–13× longer (800–2,000 h) | 80–150 h (baseline) |
| Tool life on acrylic / plastics | 10–15× longer (1,000–3,000 h) | 100–200 h (baseline) |
| Resharpening cycles | 5–8 regrinds (thick tips up to 10); each pass removes only 0.2–0.3 mm of diamond | 4–6 regrinds, each removing more material |
| Surface finish | Ra ≤ 0.2 μm achievable, stable over the tool life | Ra ~0.8 μm typical, degrades as the edge wears |
| Thermal conductivity | 540–560 W/m·K — heat leaves the edge fast | ~80 W/m·K |
| Friction coefficient | ≈ 0.05 — lower cutting forces | ≈ 0.3 |
| Suited for | Abrasive engineered wood, laminates, composites, plastics, non-ferrous metals | General-purpose; the only choice for steel and cast iron |
Figures are typical published values; actual tool life depends on the workpiece material, feed rate, depth of cut, machine condition and maintenance schedule.
Delivery Scope
Single cutter. Order by part number with the diameter and flute count stated in the specifications table below.
Why Choose VPOINT
- One-year warranty on every cutter — defects in material or workmanship are covered for 12 months from delivery.
- Custom tooling — geometries, diameters, cutting lengths and shank configurations built to your drawing or sample.
- Non-standard fabrication — profiles and sizes outside the standard catalogue, including profile restoration and special applications.
- Resharpening service — cutters return to service after regrinding, restoring near-original edge performance at a fraction of new-tool cost.
- Factory-direct since 2008 — ISO 9001 manufacturing in Sichuan and Dongguan, China; 40Cr chrome-molybdenum steel bodies; no trading intermediaries.
Send a drawing, a sample or a worn tool, and our engineering team will quote the exact specification you need.
Precision & Quality Control
Every cutter is inspected at micron level before shipment. Cutting edge condition, cutting diameter (ØD), shank diameter (Ød), cutting length (L1) and overall length (L) are measured against the values listed in the specifications table, and cutting edge runout and concentricity are verified on the assembled tool.
Tools measuring outside tolerance are reground or scrapped — they do not ship. Inspection is performed under our ISO 9001 quality system, with batch records retained for traceability.
