Metal Grinding, Polishing and High-Speed Carving Cone Bits
Cones that grind, polish and carve – the speed-and-pressure map for three duties on one head.
Design and Construction — a VPOINT cone-shape carbide burr for chamfer cleanup and taper work, sized for steel / stainless welds and similar work. YG8 carbide at HRA 89–91; die-grinder reference speeds are in the performance table below, with the flute-style guidance in the FAQ. ISO 9001 production, batch-verified, custom sizes from drawings.
Design and Construction
Cone heads specified for multi-duty bench work: coarse enough to grind metal, fine enough to carve at high RPM, and capable of a polishing pass with compound at feather pressure. The technique map ships with the bit.
How It Works
Duty is a dial, not a tool change: speed and pressure select the behaviour – grind at 30,000 RPM, carve at 45,000 RPM nose-only, polish at top RPM with compound.
Applications
Art metalwork, jewellery support, model engineering, small-part finishing.
Field Cases
- Art smith: one cone ground, carved and polished a bronze fitting in one session.
- Model shop: three setup changes eliminated per part.
- Jewellery support: the map made the technique teachable.
Performance Data
| Metric | Value / Observation |
|---|---|
| Duty map | Grind / carve / polish by speed-pressure |
| Grind | About 30,000 RPM, firm pressure |
| Carve | About 45,000 RPM, nose only |
| Polish | Top RPM + compound, feather touch |
Suitable Materials
Bronze, brass, aluminium, silver, steel and plastics.
Standard reference values for guidance only — always adjust to the workpiece material, the machine spindle speed and the feed, and confirm on the actual part.
Material Comparison: The Speed-Pressure Duty Map
How one cone switches behaviour:
| Duty | Speed & Pressure | Contact Zone | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grind metal | About 30,000 RPM + firm pressure | Flank contact | Stock removal |
| Carve detail | About 45,000 RPM + nose only | Point contact | Line work |
| Polish finish | Top RPM + compound + feather touch | Swept surface | Mirror finish |
| Tool changes | Zero between duties | Three tools saved | Session speed |
| Learning curve | One map card | Teachable | Repeatable |
Delivery Scope
Bit in tube with duty map card.
Why Choose VPOINT
Three duties on one head – the small-work multiplier.
Precision & Quality Control
Nose fineness and flank profile checked per batch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which cone angle for a countersink cleanup?
Match the burr angle to the countersink: 90° for standard screw seats, 60° for narrower chamfers, 30° for gentle tapers — one-pass edge breaks on cast iron and steel.
Cone or inverted cone?
Standard cone widens toward the tip for chamfer work; the inverted cone widens toward the shank and reaches into angled pockets.
Which cut style on cast iron?
Double-cut clears the abrasive chips fast; single-cut leaves a smoother finish on the tapered wall.
How does one head do three jobs?
Speed and pressure select the behaviour – the map card shows it.
Compound included?
Guide card yes; compound separate.
Beginner friendly?
The map makes it teachable.
Which metals?
Bronze, brass, aluminium, silver, steel.
Setup savings?
Two tool changes per job, typically.
