Carbide Tipped Brad Point Dowel Drill Bits
Product Description
Dowel drill bits or wood-boring bits are essential in the cabinet and kitchen industries, expertly crafted for drilling clean dowel holes in materials like softwood, hardwood, MDF, veneered wood, and other composites. Our dowel drill bits, made from high-quality virgin tungsten carbide, deliver exceptional drilling speed and durability. Designed as brad-point bits, they are ideal for creating smooth, flat-bottomed holes, perfect for shelving pins.
VPOINT’s Carbide Tipped Brad Point Dowel Drill Bits come with a non-stick coating that allows chips to slide out easily, preventing residue build-up. The center pin ensures precision by preventing the bit from wandering, while the outlining spurs shear the wood grain, leaving a clean edge around the hole’s periphery. Additionally, a height-adjusting screw at the end of the straight shank makes these dowel drill bits compatible with most boring machines, including Morbidelli, Biesse, Torwegge, Koch, Shibaura, Nottmeyer, and Scheer.

Design and Construction
The carbide-tipped brad point dowel drill bits carry a brad-point geometry: a centre spur that positions the hole with two cutting spurs that score the wall before the body clears the chip. Rotation R/L; diameters (ØD) 5 to 15 mm; total lengths (L) 57 or 70 mm, per the specifications table.
How It Works
The brad point pinions the bit to the exact position — no wandering on the panel surface — and the spurs score the hole wall ahead of the chip-clearing body, leaving a crisp-edged dowel hole. The standard geometry for precise dowel joinery.
Applications
- Precise dowel hole drilling
- Multi-spindle drilling heads
- Panel furniture dowel joinery
- Line boring stations
Suitable Materials
- Melamine-faced particleboard
- MDF and laminated boards
- Plywood
- Solid wood panels

The brad point keeps hole position exact and the wall crisp across high-volume runs.
Material Comparison: Tungsten Carbide vs. High-Speed Steel
This drill carries tungsten carbide — the production standard for woodworking lines. The figures below are typical industry data showing where carbide and HSS each win, so you can match the material to the job.
| Property | Tungsten Carbide (This Drill) | High-Speed Steel (HSS) |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness | 1,500–2,000 HV | ~850 HV (65 HRC) |
| Hot hardness | Keeps hardness at ~900–1,000 °C | Softens above ~600 °C |
| Edge life in abrasive board | Long baseline life in MDF/particleboard | Shorter — dulled quickly by adhesives and mineral fillers |
| Hole quality over life | Hole diameter holds as the edge wears slowly | Diameter shrinks visibly as the point wears |
| Regrind | 4–6 regrinds typical | 2–3 regrinds, softer edge deforms faster |
| Brittleness | Higher — avoid side loads and impacts | Lower — more forgiving of misuse |
| Suited for | Production drilling in MDF, particleboard, plywood, solid wood | Light-duty and occasional drilling |
Figures are typical published values; actual tool life depends on the workpiece material, feed rate, spindle speed and cooling.
Delivery Scope
Single bit, box quantities on request. Order by the diameter, length and rotation stated in the specifications table below.
Why Choose VPOINT
- One-year warranty on every cutter — defects in material or workmanship are covered for 12 months from delivery.
- Custom tooling — diameters, shanks, cutting lengths and flute configurations built to your drawing or sample.
- Non-standard fabrication — sizes outside the standard catalogue, including special geometries.
- Resharpening service — cutters return to service after regrinding at a fraction of new-tool cost.
- Factory-direct since 2008 — ISO 9001 manufacturing in Sichuan and Dongguan, China; no trading intermediaries.
Send a drawing, a sample or a worn tool, and our engineering team will quote the exact specification you need.
Precision & Quality Control
Every cutter is inspected before shipment. Shank diameter, cutting-edge diameter, cutting length and overall length are measured against the values listed in the specifications table, and cutting edge runout is verified on the assembled tool.
Tools measuring outside tolerance do not ship. Inspection is performed under our ISO 9001 quality system, with batch records retained for traceability.
