Industry Long Shank Carbide Burr / Rotary Cutter
An extended-reach carbide burr for industrial deep-cavity work, with reach stated as a working parameter.
Design and Construction — a VPOINT long-shank carbide burr for deep cavities and reach work, sized for steel / stainless welds and similar work. YG8 carbide at HRA 89–91; die-grinder reference speeds are in the performance table below, with the flute-style guidance in the FAQ. ISO 9001 production, batch-verified, custom sizes from drawings.
Design and Construction
An industrial long-shank carbide burr built for deep recesses, cast cavities and areas a standard-length tool cannot reach. The extended shank is a single steel stem brazed to a carbide head; the head shapes in the set cover cylinder, tree, cone, ball and flame profiles.
How It Works
Reach is bought at the cost of rigidity. As overall length grows, the safe operating speed falls and the allowable side load drops; the operator trades speed and feed for access. Shorter reach should always be chosen when the feature allows it.
Applications
Foundry cavity cleanup, deep cast recesses, weld roots inside frames, mould and die deep pockets.
Field Cases
- Foundry: a deep cast recess was cleaned without dismantling the fixture.
- Fabrication: weld roots inside a box frame reached from one open end.
- Die shop: a deep pocket floor dressed with the shortest tool that still reached.
Performance Data
| Metric | Value / Observation |
|---|---|
| Construction | Carbide head brazed to extended steel shank |
| Reach classes | Short / medium / long / extra-long |
| Speed rule | Reduce RPM as reach increases |
| Head profiles | Cylinder, tree, cone, ball, flame |
Suitable Materials
Cast iron, carbon and alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminium castings and hardened tool steel.
Standard reference values for guidance only — always adjust to the workpiece material, the machine spindle speed and the feed, and confirm on the actual part.
Material Comparison: Reach Classes: 100 / 150 / 200 / 300 mm
What extra reach costs. Typical industry practice; exact limits depend on shank diameter and machine:
| Factor | 100 mm | 150 mm | 200 mm | 300 mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum accessible depth | ~60 mm | ~110 mm | ~160 mm | ~250 mm |
| Safe speed ceiling | Highest | High | Reduced | Lowest |
| Allowable side load | Highest | High | Moderate | Light |
| Deflection under load | Lowest | Low | Noticeable | Significant |
| Chatter tendency | Low | Low | Moderate | High |
| Best use | Shallow cavities | General deep work | Deep frames | Deep mould cavities |
Delivery Scope
Single burr or assorted head set; shank diameter and overall length confirmed with the order.
Why Choose VPOINT
Reach is treated as a stated parameter with a speed trade-off, not just a longer version of the same tool.
Precision & Quality Control
Braze concentricity, shank straightness and head runout checked per lot with ISO 9001 batch traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions
How deep can the long-shank version reach?
100, 150, 200 and 300 mm reach classes — pick the shortest reach that gets you there, because reach amplifies any collet runout.
How do I keep it from chattering?
Seat the shank fully, use light pressure, and let the flutes clear — long tools punish heavy hands.
Same head codes as standard burrs?
Yes — SA–SM contours carry over, so a long-shank burr matches the shape you already run on short shanks.
How long a reach can I use?
Choose the shortest tool that reaches the feature; extra length reduces safe speed and side load.
Why reduce RPM on a long shank?
Longer overhang lowers the speed at which the tool begins to vibrate.
Is the head brazed?
Yes – a carbide head brazed to a steel extended shank.
Which head shapes?
Cylinder, tree, cone, ball and flame profiles are available.
What is inspected?
Braze concentricity, shank straightness and head runout per lot.
